Witnesses and evidence

How the CPS handles witnesses and evidence during prosecution.

Witnesses should be treated fairly, respectfully and with appropriate regard to safeguarding, accessibility and confidentiality. Prosecutors must preserve the integrity of evidence and avoid unnecessary disclosure of personal or sensitive information.

Where a witness needs an adjustment or protective arrangement, the CPS works with the relevant police, court, safeguarding or support body. Any formal measure must have the required legal or procedural basis.

Platform messages, recordings and screenshots may be evidence, but platform access permissions do not themselves prove legal authority or admissibility. Evidence must be preserved and recorded through the proper case process.
