How the CPS is kept accountable

Independence in case decisions with public, parliamentary and inspection accountability.

The CPS is accountable through its Director, public reporting, the Attorney General’s superintendence, parliamentary accountability and independent inspection arrangements. These mechanisms do not permit political direction of an individual prosecution.

Inspection findings and recommendations are handled through the LL Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate. Public reporting is subject to the limits needed for fair proceedings, confidentiality, safeguarding and personal information.
